Hi! My name is Mackenzie. I am based out of Mesa, AZ and currently studying to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner or “NTP”. What is an NTP, you may ask? An NTP is someone who assists clients in navigating their health journey by making recommendations regarding food (and sometimes supplementation) to help the client address health concerns and goals. Just think of me as your own personal hype girl! However, NTPs do not diagnose or treat and instead, we focus on “healthy function, basic disruptions of healthy function, and Foundational support.” (Nutritional Therapy Association [NTA], 2020b)
Big picture, NTPs utilize five main areas of focus to help guide our clients: Digestion, Blood Sugar, Hydration, Minerals, and Fatty Acids. We do this by encouraging our clients to consume a nutrient-dense, properly prepared whole-food diet, which is basically just returning back to the basics. By utilizing traditional wisdom, scientific research, and your personal knowledge of how your body works, together we create the perfect recipe to support your body.
NTPs believe each person is bio-individual. This means our looks, lifestyle, and eating habits are unique — so why would we think our nutritional needs would be any different? Along the same lines, our body also shows us what it needs in its own distinct way. Constipated? Have Acne? Experiencing food allergies? All symptoms of a bigger root cause. As NTP’s we assist you in decoding the signs your body shows you and in turn work with you to figure out how to best support your body moving forward.
Although we are each bio-individual, one thing all bodies have in common is the ability to naturally self-regulate by adjusting our biological systems — we call this homeostasis. However, with today’s diet filled with processed food, inflammatory oils, and tons of sugar, it’s hard for our body to function at its best, leading to the “development of a myriad of chronic health symptoms.” (NTA, 2020a)
In this case, the saying, “we are what we eat,” couldn’t be more true. By fueling our bodies with whole, organic, local foods we are able to obtain micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), which we can only get from consuming these nutrient-dense foods. In addition to micronutrients, we also get macronutrients from the foods we eat (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates). However, we don’t always make sure they correspond with our goals. This is where NTPs come in to help, creating things such as personalized meal plans.
In addition to the foods we eat, the way we prepare food also matters. This can look like cooking foods so they are easier to digest, fermenting foods to encourage healthy gut bacteria, and so much more. Don’t like to cook? That’s okay! Working with an NTP allows you to discuss what this looks like for you and your lifestyle.
You are the expert on your own body and way of life. By focusing on your goals, the hope is to evoke lifestyle changes that you stick with instead of another diet you do for a couple days, months, or years, and then revert back to your old ways. If you are interested in going back to the basics in order to improve your health you’re in the right place, and I’m so excited to be on this journey with you!
